We have generously been gifted with lunch and a tour at the Colonel Burns Ranch for our professional team and special guests on Friday, October 12th. Our project President Tommy Head, his wife Wynona, and Executive Director Jan Fischer were fortunate to have their own tour of the ranch recently and can attest to to what a wonderful and exciting experience it is.

Colonel Burns Ranch, located in Brown County, is owned by Dr. Paul Burns, a retired throat surgeon. The ranch was purchased by Paul’s grandfather in 1874 and Paul and his brother Pierce Burns, a retired chemical engineer and author, were raised there.

Most notable about the ranch are the efforts that the Paul and his family have made to restore it to native grasses and plants and to preserve and restore its historical sites. For this achievement they received The Lone Star Land Steward award from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) in May of this year. The awards recognize private landowners for excellence in habitat management and wildlife conservation and were begun in 1996.

TPWD has released a brief video profiling the Colonel Burns Ranch.

You can learn more about the award at the TPWD website and from their announcement of this year’s honorees.
